A Step-by-Step Guide to Funeral Arrangements and Burial
Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be an incredibly challenging and emotional time. However, as Muslims, we find solace in the words of Allah (swt) and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which provide hope of a reunion in the Hereafter. We believe that every aspect of life, including death, is part of Allah’s perfect plan, and we pray to be taken as believers.
“Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.” (Prayer of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) upon reuniting with his family.)
According to the narration of Abu Sa’id and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Remind those who are on their deathbed to say the Shahadah ‘La ilaha illallah…’ (hoping it will be their last words).”
Among the five rights of a believer is to attend funeral prayers and participate in the funeral processions. We should pray for others as we would like them to pray for us.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever follows a funeral procession and offers the funeral prayer, then leaves, will have one Qirat reward. And whoever follows it, offers the funeral prayer, and stays until the burial is completed, will have two Qirats of reward, both of which are greater than Mount Uhud.”
